Finding Independence in the Company We Keep
What does it take to achieve recovery from the things that keep us down?

Have you ever stepped out of your door in the morning only to be confronted by a flat tire on your car? All plans come to a grinding halt for the simple lack of air in your tires.

That is what recovery is like when we deflate ourselves with negative self-talk. We can literally talk ourselves OUT of our own recovery through our inability to be a friend to ourselves when we need a friend the most. This is both damaging and unnecessary, but it is the most common mistake we make and the area that is most overlooked when we are working on our recovery goals.

Next time you are tempted to say something to yourself about your lack of intelligence, discipline, stamina, perseverance, potential for success, looks, or any other area where you are already bruised and worn down, make a different choice. (click HERE to read the entire article)

Question of the Month
Dear Shannon, I am eighteen years old. People have been comparing me to my older sister my whole life. I am overweight and she is in perfect shape. People say that we do not look like sisters because she is gorgeous and I am fat and ugly. I usually feel good about myself when I am alone, but when I am with other people I feel badly. Even though it is not my sister who makes these comments to me, it is hard for us to get along because I am sick of hearing about how beautiful and talented she is and how much I supposedly wish I was like her. Sometimes I try to compete with her but it is no contest. She will always be better looking and outdo me at everything. We mostly have a good relationship, but there is always pressure for me to measure up to her, and that causes lots of problems between us. I was hoping you might have some suggestions for not letting these things bother me so much, and if you know any ways that I could maybe impr ove my relationship with my sister. Thank you so much!
