In 2003, an estimated 5.1 million youths aged 12 to 17 received treatment or counseling for emotional or behavior problems in the year prior to the interview (20.6 percent).

The most commonly reported treatment sources were school counselors, school psychologists, or teachers (48.0 percent), as well as private therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, or counselors (46.1 percent).

Reasons cited most often for treatment :"felt depressed" (50.2 percent), "breaking rules or acting out" (25.7 percent), "felt very afraid or tense" (21.4 percent), and "thought about killing self or tried to kill self" (18.9 percent). Other reasons include school/eating/social problems and other mental disorders.
