In 2003, an estimated 19.5 million Americans aged 12 or older were current illicit drug users (marijuana, cocaine/crack, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and nonmedical use of prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives.)

8.2 percent of the population aged 12 years old or older are illicit drug users.

Young adults aged 18 to 25 reported the highest rate of current use of any tobacco products (44.8 percent).

The most commonly reported way that youth smokers obtained cigarettes was having a friend or relative buy the cigarettes (63.3 percent).
