Warning Signs: Self-Harm

'Covering up' - wearing clothing inappropriate to the season (i.e. long sleeves year-round, long pants in summer)

Withdrawal from communications and formerly valued relationships

Secretive behaviors

History of sexual abuse, molestation, physical/emotional abuse

History of eating and other psychological disorders

History of substance abuse

Evidence of scrapes, scratches, 'picking' behaviors, hair-pulling are often early warning signs

Lack of strong emotional ties to primary caregivers

Apparent suicide attempts - person may in fact be self-injuring

Onset most likely during teen years

Affects both females and males
